In 1981 Joe researched and wrote the first edition of the Thailand guide. With a master's degree in Thai language and Asian art history at the University of California, Berkeley, the accomplished writer with an interest in rock guitar and subversive politics has worked as a translator, university lecturer, tour leader /interpreter of Thai in San Francisco. In addition to his guidebook and literary work, Joe contributes freelance or syndicated articles to periodicals such as Condé Nast Traveler, Geographical, the Guardian, the Independent on Sunday, International Herald Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times Special Editions, Outside, San Francisco Examiner, South China Morning Post and the Wall Street Journal.
