Michael is a veteran wilderness guide with a proven inability to stay on the beaten path, and has made a habit of hanging out with people who live in remote places. His book Men of Salt: Crossing the Sahara on the Caravan of White Gold relates his thousand-mile odyssey with one of the world's last working camel caravans. His other freelance work includes writing articles and taking pictures for the New York Times. He lives along the Rio Embudo, in northern New Mexico.
