His book Men of Salt: Crossing the Sahara on the Caravan of White Gold relates his thousand-mile odyssey with one of the world's last working camel caravans. His other freelance work includes writing articles and taking pictures for the New York Times. He lives along the Rio Embudo, in northern New Mexico.
