iceland: day 2. after a great night's sleep, splendid breakfast at our hostel, and confidently equipped with maps, we embarked to explore the "golden circle". this includes the natural attractions of pingvellir valley, geysir, and gulfoss waterfall.

dismally unprepared for the bitter cold, we wrapped our heads and necks with our little towels. that's better! in addition to being beautiful, pingvellir has a rich and terrifying history. it was the gathering site of the viking legislative assembly. as we hiked down into the valley, past crystal clear streams and pools, it was chilling to think that in this tranquil place, people had been hung, drowned, and burned at the stake as a consequence of violating the laws of that time.

geysir, the geyser after which reportedly all geysers are named, is the largest of a group of hot springs. geysir lazily erupts about once every 50-60 minutes, but it's neighbor, stokka blows every 10-15. basking in the hot steam felt good.

saved the best for last: gulfoss. the wind had accelerated to gale force. with hearts pounding, we were able to inch right up to the edge of the majestic falls. absolutely gorgeous! we could only praise the One that designed and created such wonders.

iceland was truly a land of extreme beauty. the next stop on our journey is scotland.

stay tuned for foodie call: our diary of the eats!
