foodie call: iceland

this is the first installment of foodie call- a discussion of all things food related during our trip. in today's discussion i will be covering the food we had in iceland.

prior to our take off for iceland, we read and heard from multiple sources to try something we never thought would be 1. popular and 2. good in iceland. take a wild stab at it. i'm pretty sure 99.99% will not mention the amazing hot dogs.

yes, you read right. apparently hot dog is a must have item in iceland. it's not like

"oh. you should try the hot dogs. they're pretty good."

it's more like

"you gotta try the hot dogs. they're soooooooooooo good."

normally the only dogs i get really excited about are grays papaya. but since i heard recommendations with such enthusiasm, i decided that i must seek for it.

man oh man, was that a great decision. they were good. real good. i love it when dogs have a great snap to it and these snapped like there's no tomorrow. a special icelandic touch is the usage of fried onion as a topping which i have yet seen anywhere else. i actually am not a fan of that but robbo thought it was good. other topping options are mayo, ketchup, and a wierd soupy mild mustard sauce. we sought out this place right by the water as it was known to be the place for it (on tryggvagata, near posthuss) and instantly knew we found the right place. its nothing more than a little booth but you see both the locals and the tourists outside chomping. for about 2 usd, you get a dog and a drink which makes for a pretty cheap snack in a very expensive country.

the dogs.

another memorable place we went to was a seafood shack called the sea baron. it's literally a shack-we sat on cushioned oil cans, and tables were planks. the place was famous for their lobster bisque and seafood skewers. well, that's pretty much all they served. ordering was very simple; all you have to do is choose what you want out of a fridge case display. robbo chose the scallops and i chose the halibut. other choices were cod, potatoes, and whale. i wanted to try whale but passed in support of anti-whale hunting efforts. we did asked a guy who had it at the joint how it was and he said it was quite good with the texture being similar to beef.

now, robbo is quite a seafood snob since she was spoiled with the freshest salmon, halibut, trout, flounder, clams, mussels and crab every summer during her life in alaska. she's hesitant to order seafood at restaurants because she is often disappointed. when her face perked up after tasting the skewers, you know they're serving up some fresh stuff. the halibut was perfectly grilled and the scallops were super sweet. the best meal we have ever had on a stick. the lobster bisque was awesome-a creamy broth, with generous chunks of sweet lobster and a touch of curry. if you've known me long enough, you know i'm big on soup and my verdict is this can be a classic.
