Winter Travel Destination of the Week: Alta, Utah

Blog: The 4 Season Travel Blog - 25 February 2009

I moved from snowy Norway to Southern California about 7 months ago. In my luggage I had board shorts and sandals. No snowboard, no skis, no winter clothes and no idea of how much I would regret that I left it all back there.

Even though I knew America has mountains and snow, I didn’t think a life in California would offer the best conditions for skiing. But I have realized now that there are so many great skiing resorts here! And the snow is supposed to be excellent. The other day I talked to a guy who claimed that Utah has the best powder snow in the world! He was probably exaggerating a little bit, but still; why did I leave my snowboard in Norway?

After hearing about this allegedly amazing powder snow in Utah I googled it, and I found this article on CNN.com: Alta: No glitz, no attitude, waist deep powder.

The article is about Alta, Utah, and according to the author all this place has is snow. Tons of waist deep powder snow and nothing else. Everybody there are there to ski. You won’t even find snowboarders, they are banned! This is also emphasized in there motto: “Alta is for skiers”. And that is actually ok with me; I love snowboarding, but I would gladly convert to skiing for a week to try this place out. To find out more about Alta I did a little research and I love what I read. This resort has huge areas for beginners, with intermediate and expert slopes just next to them.

Bloggers also claim that Alta has better powder than other resorts in the area. And I even like what others may see as a draw-back: Alta has a slightly old fashion feel to it. To me that just means that there is no pressure to be cool and fancy; this place is for people who don’t need anything else then the peace and joy of cruising down an untouched mountain (at least as untouched as you can find with a high speed lift taking you to the top). And I think this is the the reason Rachel Levin, the author of the article, now calls herself an Altaholic. And for that same reason Alta, Utah, is now Winter-Travel.org’s Winter Travel Destination of the Week!
