The Lyngen Alps in Norway – Intense Natural Beauty

The Lyngen Alps
Far north in Norway, way north of the Arctic Circle, you can find a place so wonderful that the lack of ski lifts won’t even make your kids start crying. Both adrenalin hunting ski bums and relaxed families just looking for a quiet vacation surrounded by nature’s most stunning beauty will love this place.
The Lyngen Alps (Lyngsalpene in Norwegian) has been mentioned in a few skiing magazines and blogs, but has never received much more attention than a sporadic article now and then. The reason is probably it’s fairly inaccessible location and lack of ski lifts (and helicopter/snowmobile ban). But the matter of fact is that this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. And if you are into skiing; it offers top world class mountains, snow, cliffs and extreme skiing. The only thing you need to know before booking your tickets is what I already mentioned: No Lifts! Be prepared to use your feet!
A popular way for tourists to visit this area is to go on tours such as the “Sail and Ski”. On this tour you have a yacht as a mobile base camp that takes you to a new mountain every day. Another great option is to stay at a lodge or cabin in the area, and take speed boat tours from there to the mountains of choice. Most of the peaks you climb are at around 1000 meters above sea level. This might not sound very extreme compared to other places on our earth, but the fact that you start each day at 0 meters above sea level changes the story quite a bit. This is the ultimate way to experience Norway’s fjords, skiing and mountains. Another great thing about this is that you have the mountains all to your self. You make your own trail as you climb the mountain and you have untouched powder snow for your descent. This makes skiing here more adventurous and adrenaline filled than anywhere else.
As a Norwegian who enjoys winter, snow, skiing and travel, I am somewhat embarrassed that I have never been to Lyngsalpene. But I am like a lot of other travelers; I often prefer to travel halfway around the world to do something I could have done at home. An example: I have been to the southern cape of Africa, but never the northern cape in Norway. Anyways, back to the topic: Lyngsalpene is the perfect destination for you who like mountains, snow, quiet, remote, natural beauty. Here you can enjoy your vacation without any crowds of tourist, but still enjoy a view that beats 90% of the worlds tourist attractions.
