Spring in Norway: Constitution Day - May 17th

With spring in the air, long days and several national holidays and celebrations (including May 17th the constitution day of Norway), Norway is the perfect Spring Travel Destination for May!

This is the season for the ceremonial first “utepils” (a beer served and enjoyed outdoors) of the year. Norwegians seem obsessed with this during the spring; as soon as the sun appears, you will find them rolled up like burritos in blankets, scarves, gloves and sunglasses, embracing their precious “utepils”. Soon after follows the first barbecue of the year.

These outdoor seasonal ceremonies mark the spring’s arrival to Norway, and makes it a truly pleasurable travel destination. People are just happy! So just spend the days walking around, enjoying the nice atmosphere, watching life and people, nature and high school graduates running around in their May-Uniform: Red or blue overalls, beer in hand, whistle in mouth, beer in other hand, foggy eyes, destroyed shoes and chronic hang-overs.. For the average Norwegian aged 19 or more these kids are a pain, for the average Norwegian aged 19 or less they are heroes. For you as a visitor, they are a tourist attraction just like the ski jump and viking ships.

May 17th is the day everything leads up to during spring in Norway. If you haven’t had the year’s first “utepils” or barbecue yet, you will this day. You will also eat ice cream and hot dogs. And even if it is snowing, which unfortunately happen once in a while, you still spend the day outdoors, at least a few hours of it. But whatever the weather is, this is a fun day to be a tourist in Norway. If you thought Americans are patriotic, you have seen nothing until you have spent this day in Norway.
