Downtown Rice Paddies

Blog: Seat of Our Pants - 15 November 2009

By: Martin

This rice paddy is located smack in the middle of the diplomatic quarters: somewhere in between our favorite grocery store and the Japanese Embassy. It is by no means unique – you see little gardens everywhere around the city; a patch of carrots here and some cilantro and herbs over there.

This illustrates the fact that Nepal is a country that is very reliant on agriculture. In fact, 75% of Nepalis are working in the agricultural sector. Most of these people are doing ’subsistence farming’, that is, they’re living on what they can grow. Even though people are living in an urban center, they still keep a cow for milk, or chickens, or perhaps a couple of goats.

If nothing else, it is a reminder of how Europe and America looked not too many generations ago.
