Balsa Rafts and Beer: Playas, Ecuador

Blog: Jamón, jamón: Alice's Gastronomic Adventures - 7 November 2009

By: Alice Laurel Driver

Balsa rafts lined the beach, their sails advertising national beer brands and local seafood restaurants. We were told that the balsa log was so buoyant that it could never sink, a thought that seemed only partially reassuring looking at the simple log raft. A young fisherman offered to take us out to sea, and, as we moved away from shore, he discussed the difficulty of life as a fisherman. He explained that he had no regular work hours and an income that was completely unpredictable. When I asked him if he hoped his children would also fish, he replied with a definite no. "I hope they will continue their education and get good jobs," he said.
