Lady and the City

Blog: A Lady in London - 7 November 2009

On Friday night I went to see the Sex and the City movie. I won't lie; I never watched the show very much when it was on the air. However, I still wanted to see the film just to know what all the fuss was about.

While watching the movie I was a bit surprised at how little the film focused on "the city," i.e. New York. While the principal characters were based there, significant parts of the film also took place in Mexico and California. So much for the Big Apple.

Reflecting on the film, I realized that there were some interesting parallels with my own existence in the UK. I have lived in London for almost eight months now (hard to believe!), but most of my exciting adventures have taken place everywhere but London. Uncannily, like SATC, some of my most recent stories were all about Mexico and California.

To remedy my lack of news about London I resolved to have an action-packed weekend that would make the girls across the pond jealous. After the movie I headed down to Cuckoo, a club in London's chi chi Mayfair, with six other lovely ladies. Once there we proceeded to dance the night away (literally), emerging from the club just after 4am. By the time I arrived in Hampstead at 4:30 it was literally light as day outside. Not a bad start.

Saturday afternoon I took to the city once again as a guest at a London birthday scavenger hunt my colleague planned for his wife. As part of a six-person team I explored the streets of Soho, Westminster and Spitalfields searching for answers to clues, taking lots of photos and picking up little gifts for the birthday girl along the way. The day was impeccably planned and was a fabulous way to see London.

On Sunday we were once again blessed with eighty-degree weather, so my boyfriend whisked me off to Richmond Park for the afternoon (actually, I planned the whole thing but I have to make it sound somewhat romantic if I'm trying to give SATC a run for its money, right?).

We walked along the river hand-in-hand, passing the idyllic sidewalk cafes and pubs, and made our way to the beautiful park for a pleasant picnic on the green. We missed seeing the deer for which the park is famous, but we did get to see a swan attack two small dogs, a droll event from which I'm sure Carrie Bradshaw could draw some obscure parallel to life in the Big Apple.

My London weekend--one of a very few in the past several months--made me realize all over again how amazing this place is. No wonder the ladies from SATC chose to hold the world premier of their movie here. They know which city is really the best in the world.
