Marching in Havana

In winter 2006, I fulfilled a long-awaited dream I traveled to Cuba. The trip swept me off my feet in more ways than one but a definite highlight was the afternoon I spent marching with the Cuban people through the streets of Havana. The cause of the protests was the U.S. tolerance of anti-Cuban terrorists on its soil. People were particularly outraged about the asylum appeal of Luis Posada Carriles, a dangerous anti-Castro terrorist responsible for the 1976 bombing of the Cuban commercial airliner that killed 73 people. The passion and fire with which the people took to the streets of Havana was so infectious that I kept on marching with my Cuban brothers and sisters, on and on. Thought I'd share some scenes from the protests, taken by yours truly and my dear friend and travel companion Christine.
It was a great excuse to be merry and drink cervezas with friends.
Kids were happy to be out of school.
Teenagers were happy to strike a cool pose.
The police was, unsuccessfully, trying to look cool...
... and successfully stopping traffic.
Boys were happy to smile...
... and so were the girls.
There was a whiff of revolution in the air, and Fidel live on the loudspeakers. For me, just the perfect afternoon in Cuba.
