9/12/09: Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

Don’t you hate it when those darn baboons run off with your lunch? Today we set up our table for sandwiches in Lake Nakuru National Park fully expecting an onslaught of vicious baboons trying to grab any morsel they could get their hands on. Fortunately our driver was prepared with his slingshot, and the camp rangers were armed with guns similar to Tommy Lee Jones’s in Men in Black. Unfortunately, the baboons were smarter than the weapons.

We had walled off three sides of the food with safari-goers and the fourth with the truck. One of the smarter baboons snuck his way under the truck and made of with a whole bag full of tomatoes. As soon as it did this, all hell broke loose. Baboons and monkeys came from far and wide for a piece of the action. Each grabbed as many tomatoes as it could and bolted for the fences. I hadn’t seen such carnage since Wal-Mart’s last Christmas Day Sale. In all the ketchup-shed, I was able to snag a picture of one of the happy looters.

And to think I was ready to finally try that poisonous fruit/vegetable outcast.

Quick side note: the same thing happened at our dinner, only this time an ape attacked our tour guide as she was pulling the food out of the truck. It and its friends made off with a box of pasta and many other food scraps and flour that fell on the ground. Our guide wasn’t hurt.

Epilogue? Baboons have now taken bananas from our next day’s breakfast as well.
