One of the must-do things in Kukup is to enjoy the unofficial fireworks display at night. Every other chalet around you would surely be releasing some kind of fireworks right after dinnertime. You can either sit back and enjoy the “boomz boomz boomz” or buy your own “boomz” to release.

We decided to get our own supply of pyrotechnics. The lady who peddles crackers and various dried foodstuffs around the chalet during the day, also sells a range of fireworks pyrotechnics in the evening. You have to let her know your interest during the day or ask the chalet owner to link you up with these mobile salespersons.

The pyrotechnics don’t come cheap. The group decided on a box of 36-shot mini National Day Parade-style fireworks for RM90 and a box of 12 “Big Bees” (palm-sized twirling fireworks) for RM70. Potential sum of “money we are blasting away into the sky” = RM160

Thanks to our expert bargaining queen – Xiaoying, we were able to shave RM20 off + get 2 additional small rockets and 3 “Small Bees”.

Ok now we are ready to make some noise! The chalet’s wooden platform is perfect for these fireworks launches – wide spaces for you to run for cover after you have lit the fuse as well as various ‘equipment’ e.g. beer bottles as makeshift rocket launchers.

You can also ask the chalet owner for joss-sticks and lighters. To pray for safety? No! We learnt that using a lit joss-stick to burn the fuse is much less terrifying and painful than holding a wavering match-stick to do the same thing.

We were ambitious and tried some simultaneous “Big Bee” launches. Unfortunately, we were not able to coordinate the burning of the fuse and usually when one of the “Big Bee” has started burning, the others will start running for cover since the “Bee” will start flying off and exploding after a few seconds!  See the following video for an example:

Now for the finale – the National Day Parade style Fireworks. The instructions are simple – Light Fuse and Get Away!

People usually shout “Huat Ah” for luck and fortune after such major fireworks launch. However we were speechless and amazed at the sight of this fireworks display to remember shouting. So here goes (watching a video of fireworks also counts):
