Zugliget Chair-lift

According to Lonely Planet – a more interesting way down the hills is to get off at Janos-hegy, the fourth stop on the Children’s Railway and the highest point (527m) in the hills.  About 700 m due east is the chair lift (Budapest Zugliget Libego) which will take you down to Zugligeti ut.

700 metres is quite a long walk + without a compass to tell where is East + 2 routes to choose from = Confusion!  Luckily, we met a cyclist who came out of nowhere who pointed us in the right direction.

To keep it simple, after you get off the train at Janos-Hegy.. this is not a common tourist route so the station can be quite deserted so take a deep breath and hope that u had gotten off at the correct stop as you see the train rumbling away..

… then go up the stairs with the 2 Libego signs and once you reach the top, turn LEFT (the route is uphill – see arrow in picture) and walk and walk and walk til you see some form of civilisation – buildings and playground.

When you finally see civilisation – actually the first thing you see is a playground, look for a big white building and walk in and buy your tickets at a provision store inside for 700 HUF per person.

According to Lonely Planet, the chairlift is closed on the Monday of every even-numbered week so plan ahead to avoid disappointment.  The Libego website is only in Hungarian.

The ride is pretty much like the Sentosa Skyride except its much higher and longer.

Goods are also transported up from Zugliget to Janos-hegy, possibly for the provision store.

Finally after a 15-min ride, we reached the foot of the Buda Hills, concluding a very exciting morning which involved us trying different sorts of transport in Budapest.
