Blog: Send The Bugger Back - 16 April 2009
By: Dan Bowen
I’ve had a few chats with a good Australian fella in the bunk above the past couple of days. There is even the possibility of him putting me on to some work if I’m ever in Perth, which I may well be in the not so distant future.
Tech update: I’ve binned off the Fring iPhone app and am using the official Skype one now, a much cleaner interface. Also this Boingo service isn’t much kop, 16 days in and I’ve only found 1 hotspot (Walmart). What’s a hotspot not? – Boingo provided that’s what. Will stick with the free trial to the end of the month and sack it after that I think.
Book update: I finished The Alchemist the other day and thought it was okay. The 2nd half goes a little bit vague, wishy washy and Silmarillion like. If this is where Vinny Kompany’s head is at no wonder City’s season is over and they are out of the UEFA Cup.
Football update: City’s season is over and they are out of the UEFA Cup. I walked about an hour and a half from the hostel to find this boozer showing the game. Good little joint, met a Mauritian former season ticket holder named Dom (who gave me a lift half the way back to downtown) and the owner, a fella from Belfast who gave us a round on the house. Good show from the Blues, but too little too late once more. 11 points worse off than this time last season, thin ice for a certain Welshman I reckon.
The amount of miles I’m doing daily is probably not recommended in flip-flops (a neccessity I reckon in this weather), I literally have bloody feet, not overly painful though so onwards I say readers!
I went to the National World War II museum this morning on route to the pub, it was excellent. I’m yet to find a subject of any kind that holds more interest than this conflict. As ever, I didn’t allow myself nearly enough time to explore satisfactorly. Only cost me $8 with my stud. card, as opposed to the $20 standard (I did whack an extra buck in the donation tray though to slightly mitigate the guilt).
Just nipped back to The Bourbon to sort my stuff out (not easy doing it in the pitch black at 6 in the morning) prior to my flight to San Antonio. Then I’m off to some ghosts and legends tour or something, touristy I know but I’m a sucker for all that supernatural bobbins.
Pic – a Sherman.
Next up, Texas and Texans.
