Night Sky View

Moon, Venus, Jupiter

On the evening of Monday 1 December I stepped out of my back door in Melbourne, Australia, glanced up at the sky soon after dark and was treated to this view. The three brightest objects in the night sky – the moon, Venus and Jupiter – were all close together. I didn’t realise that’s what they were immediately, but a quick Google News search turned up a Honolulu Advertiser story about what I was seeing. Furthermore I was treated to ‘earthshine,’ when the earth reflects sun onto the dark side of the moon which appears as a ghost-like circle edged by the white crescent moon.
