Dangers & annoyances
Petty theft and muggings, sometimes violent, are rife throughout Lomé, especially on the beach and around the Grand Marché. Taxi-motos in the city may be convenient, but they are also dangerous. Avoid large gatherings of people, and seek advice if you’re planning to attend a street party. If you do have to walk around Lomé after sunset, stick to well-lit thoroughfares.
Police roadblocks in Lomé act as an unofficial revenue-collection exercise. Togo’s roads are a hair-raising experience at night, particularly north of Kara.
