pretty much any North American suburb! And pretty much any U.S city including the downtown (there are some exceptions of course). Newark, Buffalo, Detroit, Bay City, Gary, Dayton come to mind. Calgary sucks.
Sofia is pretty depressing and Brussels is a a dump. Lagos sounds like hell on earth. Cotonou (Benin) lives up to its name in the Fon language meaning river of death.

Maribor, Slovenia (in Summer) - No other backpackers, unfriendly hostel manager, nothing to see
Bratislava, Slovakia - Nothing to see, the best thing there's that the a half-liter-beer costs 40 Cent in a Pub
St.Davids, Wales - Well ok... probably it wasn't the right time... but also nothing to do here either except drinking

Some nameless place on the border between Nepal & India....didn't want to be stuck there after nightfall - !

Ciudada del Este on a rainy day

Unfriendliest people: L.A.

During the (1st) gulf war my plane landed for refuelling at Tashkent, in January. Of course I can't claim to have explored the place but it seemed totally grey, depressing and made of concrete. Even the people looked grey....

Florence= dirty, polluted, disorganised and people are really cranky, rude and offputting. Also overly crowded 9 months out of 12. Vey boring nightlife too.
But who said Rome is a bad place?? it's gorgeous, with an awesome atmosphere and the people there welcoming and friendly. It just depends when you decide to go there. Summer is pretty disappointing b/c too crowded and even the locals get stressed with so many tourists. But go there from September onwards and you shouldn't be disappointed.

I cannot believe some people said London/Bangkok are the worst...They're amazing places to visit (in my humble experience...) Polluted all you like but the people make up for it and there's just so much to see! They're also great bases to travel throughout UK and Thailand

I can't believe how many foreigners apparently wound up in Newark and/or Detroit. This is baffling. True, these cities were once vibrant metropoli but race riots in the late 1960s and the rise of suburbs and car culture left these places literally gutted and depopulated by the early 70s. I can't imagine what a foreign guidebook would say that convinces tourists to visit: "Plenty of parking... few other tourists... unique cultural experience..."

I haven't travelled too widely in the third world, but I was shocked at how hostile Morocco was. Beautiful and fascinating landscape, cities, and culture, but the amount of energy I expended fending off scammers and extracting myself from rug shops and unscrupulous guides ruined what otherwise would have been a great trip.

Worst places-

London. Beautiful architecture, great museums, and if you do NOT attempt to friendly with the natives you will have a great time.

Lima- shithole.

Guatemala City- you might as well shoot yourself before you go into the city, because youre doing the same thing by going into the city anyways.

Belize City- the insides of my garbage can for everyone to see!

Utah- georgeous. However, see my notes about London. Bring your own liquor too.

Singapore- Now I am sure this will exlicit some responses, but I did not like Singapore for several reasons. If extreme cleanliness and high prices are your thing, you will love it, but this place shows how materialism will screw you. They sold their souls. Only place in Asia I have had food poisoning. Take me to Bangkok anyday!

Florence- terrible people and bunch of annoying US college girls getting drunk and screwing their brains out. However, you don't go to Florence for these people. You go for the history and buildings. Try smaller Italian towns for the real experience.

for me anywhere that the torists have discoverd. i like to avoid the tourist trail. espesialy if it is world cup time and the bars have tvs. also londons kings cross area at night. realy not plesant. i walked out of there 3 days ago and had 4 police vans scream past, at least 10 cop cars the helipcopter was over head and the armed response unit went flying past. only to stop about 50 yards away.

live life to the full. you only live once so live it to the limit and worry about the effect wen ur dead or cant carry on. my life motto is; Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in side-ways, totally worn out, shouting: "Holy Shit...What a ride!"

Cannot believe someone mentioned Prague as the worst city

It is such an amazing place!
Breathtaking architecture, friendly people, everywhere (I mean everywhere) you look at there's some amazing detail, glorious food, great nightlife, cheap accommodation for westerners. Seriously, what more could one want. Oh and the Czechs are SO good at handling all the tourists...unlike many other places that have been exposed to tourism for much longer.

I can't understand the complaints about Utah. It is a pretty, underrated state, with several outstanding national parks, outstanding hiking opportunities, and a very low crime rate.

Really have to agree with the three previous posters who said Poipet, Cambodia. I saw a 5-year-old child begging there with a dead baby in his arms.

It is probably Nikel, Northwestern most corner of Russia, near Norwegian border.

15,000 inhabitants who live in high rise communist blocks that are centered around a metal processing factory built in the Stalin era. That's it.

Oh, and its near the 70th parallel which means Winter temperatures from mid-August to mid-June and close to complete darkness for 4 months every year.

I overlooked the town from a cold war observation tower on the Norwegian border. When I asked the attendant what is was like over there, she answered "It's dead".
