ATMs, bring 2 cards with you

My Mastercard lost its magnetic strip today, luckily I had a spare.

Try to use the ATM in the daytime for reasons in my post below, plus, if the bank is closed and there is a problem or malfunction, you can't do anything about it untill next day. Not much of a problem unless you are leaving that night or early next day and can't extend your trip.

I had the same thing happen to mine my first visit.Thought at first it would be a minor inconvenience until finding no one seemed to know how to manually complete the transaction without the electronic swipe.

Yes, it can be very hard to find someone who can do it manually. It malfunctioned in the TOPS supermarket in Chiang Mai, and they told me they would have to phone Bangkok for authorisation, they didn't seem keen, so I didn't worry about it.

I agree with the OP. I always bring two credit cards, two atm cards and two copies of my passport. I give one copy of each of these to my boyfriend to carry in his belongings in case something happens to mine. Better safe than sorry!
