Motorcycle bag-snatching reaches Chiang Mai

Last Sunday night, two people on a motorcycle attempted to snatch my companion's handbag while we were walking on Moon Muang soi 5, near Tha Phae gate. I have never heard of this particular crime - common in other parts of the world - in Thailand before, so it may have been a 'one-off'. However, I'd recommend that anyone going to the Sunday night market or visiting other obvious tourist attractions should pay attention to their possessions and their surroundings, particularly on side streets (Moon Muang 5 is quite well-trafficked, but not well-lit). In this case, the would-be bag snatchers got nothing, but both my companion and myself were left cut and bruised.

I have read about this happening in Thailand before. It also happens in Boston and New York, Rome, and other cities around the world. This used to be a big problem when I was stationed in Nam over thirty years a go. Nothing new! Think the term "rip-off" originated there.

Be aware of your surroundings and when walking down a street keep your camera or in the case of a woman, her hand bag, on the inside away from the curb. When I walk with my carry-all bag I keep it on the inside away from the curb. I sometimes pull the bag strap over your head and wear it crosswise and the bag portion more forward if you are in a crowd. Sew velcro on the flaps of your pockets to help foil pickpockets.

And of course only carry enough money with you to see you through one day. Use the security box provided by most hotels for storing valuables and spare money. Zerox copy your information page of the passport in case you "lose" it.

Not uncommon in Bangkok, however farangs are rarely targeted. It is very common in Pattaya and there, farangs are often the victims.
