Trip Poker

Trip Poker - roll with it

HYPOTHESIS: Take a gamble on a trip.
APPARATUS: Four people, one dice, a poker face.
METHOD: Trip Poker is a travel game for four or more people. Your itinerary in this instance is created by rolling a dice, but you can easily adapt the rules to a game of poker.

1. The person who rolls the highest number wins the first round and gets to choose the destination. The destination should lie within a specified distance of where the game is being played, eg 500km.
2. The winner of the second roll decides the date of the weekend away.
3. The winner of the third roll determines the type of accommodation, eg hotel, camping, in the car, at someone’s house, under the stars, no accommodation – and no sleep!
4. The person who loses the last roll of the dice pays for the weekend.

i once went on a cycling trip with my sister using dice. at each crossing 1 and 2 was left, 3 and 4 was straight ahead, 5 and 6 was right. or if there were only to options it was 1,2,3 / 4,5,6. etcetera.

we soon decided that within villages (this was the belgian countryside) we'd opt for "straight ahead at each crossing" because we tended to circulate through blocks of new development... for the rest it was pretty cool, but it didn't get us far.

After reading Luke Rhinehart's The Dice Man (about a guy who starts living his life by the throw of a die. Hillarious and insightful book!), I experimented with this sort of thing. It seems, though, that while this "game" liberates your mind, and has you doing stuff you would not otherwise do, you usually end up doing one of two things:
Either you go: "I'm not doing THAT!" and role the dice again
Or you end up doing random boring stuff and getting to random boring places.
Once in a while, though, you will find yourself in a new and wonderful place and maybe it is worth suffering for that.
Personally I find randomization should be used in moderation, mainly when you have too many options (and no other way to decide) or when you have no options at all (and need to generate new ones). When used in this manner, it is fabulously refreshing and great fun.

I occasionally used dice to determine the next destination for my trip in Europe- travelling solo so no one else could complain about the "decisions". Helped me choose Italy over Portugal- equally satisfactory. A good experiment which i had forgotten since and end up having my recent trips planned way in advance. Next time I'll use the dice again

Right on #5.
In English, the singular is dice, and the plural is dice.

I was reading 'The Dice Man' (great book, btw) when I was India years ago and on a spur of the moment roll of the die I went to Nepal. I was in a cab on the way to the airport to catch my plane back to Japan at the time when I rolled the die. It was one of the best things I have ever done!!!! Now years later I still use the die to decide things and it is always great! I never do it though unless I am very committed to following the choice that comes up. If I am not there is no point. As #3 wrote that most people might just end up saying 'Im not doing THAT' and roll again. That completely defeats the fun and magic of it all. Only do it if you really intend to follow what the die says to do. Another time in Taiwan I met a great guy and we had a really special wkd together, as the weekend was coming to an end and we were scheduled to go separate ways we toyed with the idea of changing our plans and staying together longer. Neither of us would commit to changing plans and we both just kept talking about it. Finally I got tired of all the 'talk no action' and suggested we roll the die to decide if we stay together or go separate ways. The die told us to separate and so without thinking any further I got on a train and left. I regretted it at the time cause I really liked him but months later we did see each other and it didnt work out for us. Maybe the die knew! Anyway it is a really fun way to live every now and again. Read the book!
