Earth Day 2005 (April 22)

What are your plans for Earth Day 2005 (April 22)?

Are you joining local celebrations and campaigns? Is Earth Day relevant in 2005? And as responsible travelers, what are the small things we can do to be more eco-friendly?

My plans are simple -- pick up some trash and support the local organic markets in Oaxaca, Mexico.

If this sounds familiar, it's because a similiar query last year on Thorn Tree

Call me ignorant but I never ever heard about this. Still, I consider myself a responsible traveller but I will probably not honor that day as I will be up in the air at that moment (not very responsible you might say...).

I haven't seen anything in the local papers, but Arbor Day is being touted here. There will be tree planting events at local parks, which we will be part of. I wonder if it depends on where you live as to whether Earth Day is promoted or not.

I'll work in the garden. Good luck in Oaxaca, Ron.

It's important that we keep an eye not just on being "eco" individually but that we support broader efforts ... So here's a quick report from Oaxaca

What has taken off in the past 18 months is the development of an organic products market. Friday (April 22) is market day and I'll be visiting friends at the Organic Market.

"Earth Day" is primarily a holiday in the United States and has been converted a "PR" tool for many companies. That said, some of news is actually quite legitimate and inspiring. For those interested in reading more, check out the essay on World Changing

I was reading an article which started out talking about Earth Day and then went on to talk about the problems (and solutions) for our vanishing rain forests. It was a good article and can be found here.

Was at the local recycling center today and finally saw a banner proclaiming Earth Day.
