Sorry to hear about your bad experience, this can really spoil a trip and sour you on a country.

A FEW details would be helpful so that others can avoid the same setup. I.e. where, what the come-on story was, etc. What would you do differently next time, or just forget about buying gems in Thailand?

Jesus H Christ, #4, there are ENCYCLOPEDIAE-length tomes about the gem scam. Any, and I do mean ANY, tourist who gets scammed in this way thoroughly deserves to be scammed. Greed, greed, greed.

And so say all of us????????????? Come on, you lot - back me up here!

They say it's not as bad as they say it is.

Ive got to agree with Bangkok Boy, there are numerous articles written about the Gem Scams (even Gem Scams involving French, American and Brits) Its published all over The web not just here, Ive seen it in Travel Brochures, on Airline magazines in the Bangkok Post and like the man says its just pure greed taking over, if it sounds to good to be true it probaly is. As the OP has obviously done some research On thailand on this forum its hard to belive people get taken in on this scam

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways- body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming - WOO HOO! What a Ride!"

I agree with the OP. Never tell anyone where you are going. I hopped in a taxi once and refused to tell the driver where I was going. There was no way I was going to be scammed.

Touch my heart and you can have my body. Find my soul and I am yours for life.

Yeah, US-guy = someone who let their greed overcome their sensibilities.

The forecast today is dark and cloudy with a possibility of a drive-by.

Some of you should be embarassed by your posts - why is someone posting a valid warning to other travellers being flamed for it (and since when does a victim "deserve" what happens to them)?? Have a little compassion, people, these posts are for any sharing information, not only information that you deem worthy.
