A post from another board, in reply to someonec asking for other dentists than the one in the Landmark hotel Basement (Good english and a lot of good comments) and the Bumrungrad Dental Clinic:

    Quote

I went to the Asavanant Dental Clinic (Http:www.asavanant.com, phone 02-391-1842) located at the NE corner of Sukhumvit and Soi 55 Thonglor. Short walk from the Thong Lor BTS stop. Open to 8 pm M-F and 9 to 5 on Saturdays.
The dentist I had spoke English well, and explained everything she did in detail. I had teeth cleaning, x-rays, and 2 crowns replaced, and was pleased with the results.

I don't remember the costs, but I would guess closer to the Landmark dentist than Bumrungrad.

The teeth cleaning at the Landmark was 600THB and 1300THB at Bumrungrad.

Some other reccomendations by various patients

"I don't know about the Soi 19 dental clinic, but I can recommend the President Park Dental Clinic on Soi 24 across from the Pres. Park Hotel. A strange story really: on my first day in Bkk this past January I was taking a walk after checking in at the PP, bought some hard fruit and promptly broke an upper tooth. It was clearly a bad enough break that it would need immediate attention. As I was heading back to the hotel, I saw this clinic across the street, so I went in. The place was modern and up to date, the receptionist spoke english and said the Dentist could see me in 20 minutes. I filled out the usual forms and 20 minutes later was ushered into the treatment room. The Dentist introduced himself, and holding my forms he pointed to my home address and said the name of my home street and city with a questioning tone. When I confirmed the address, he laughed and said "Small world. Turned out he lived in an apartment in the building next door to my house for the three years he went to Tufts Dental School in Boston.
Anyway, he took x-rays and made a decent temporary repair for B1200.
I later went back for a crown using whatever the best material is. That was B13000 complete and a great job with no discomfort. "

"Teeth R Us in the Ambassador Plaza on Sukhumvit has also been reccomended."

    A dentist speaks

"I am a dentist in the States and I have been working with the School of Dentistry at Chulalongkorn for the last five years. I have gotten to see a lot of dentists in Thailand as a direct result of a research project my university has been conducting with Chula. I can recommend Dr. Piyawat Phankasol on Soi 12 very highly. He is on the second floor of Sukhumvit Plaza. The clinic name is Bunditkasol, and that is the place where I have my dentistry done when in Bangkok."

In Nov., My 2nd day in Bangkok, I was trying to open a water bottle with my teeth and tore out a big piece of a front tooth. I was very happy with the repair work done at Bangkok NursingHome Hospitol. They have a very modern dentistry dept. I had the work done in 1 hour and the bill was $28, would have cost $300 plus at home in USA

I use the dental clinic at Praram 9 Hospital, behind The Radison Hotel on Rama IX. I have some specialised dental work that l need to have done every few months and in Australia a 10-15 minute consultation costs me $125 (3500 baht). At Praram 9 the same procedure is 880 baht. My dentist speaks very good English and l'm happy with the service.

I don't think l've ever seen Praram 9 mentioned on LP but l always see westerners when l go there. The doctors and surgeons l've spoken to have always spoken good to excellent English. They have a website so if you can book ahead you will get a dentist that speaks good English for sure. I've found in Bangkok that for most medical services you are best off going to the big hospitals as that's where the best doctors seem to be, as opposed to Australia where l would first go to a local GP who would then refer you on to a private specialist. The big hospitals are all used to westerners and treat you very well.

Re: #4, l'm no dentist but the prices quoted for periodontal work seem excessive for Thailand. The prices quoted for an implant procedure are higher than what l had quoted in Australia by a Collins Street (think Harley Street) specialist. With implants there is not the sort of saving in Thailand you might expect, as much of the cost is in the materials used such as titanium, which is a constant price where ever you go in the world.

After various tries around BKK I settled into the BNH (aka Bangkok Nursing Home) Hospital at the Sathorn end of Convent Road.

Very good on-time service (which is important to me - I've always hated being kept waiting by "professionals" who think their time is more important than mine - especially when they are charging for it)

They have a great orthodontist Dr Duenpen who just did a RCT for me, and for the first time in my life she injected anaesthesia without my feeling a thing! Great job on the root canals too, followed by a new post and crown expertly done by Dr Chanawut.

Not cheap, not expensive. I won't quote prices because they have a full price list available to inspect and they give advice, though you pay once it gets to the "consult" stage. I'm more concerned with quality than price, though like most I don't like being ripped-off.

All the dentists have a speciality, so in having various things done this year I've now seen 6 different dental doctors! I don't have a problem with that - practice makes perfect, as they say! Although I did most of my dealings with them in Thai, all the dentists there are fairly fluent in English, and a couple speak French, German, Japanese and Mandarin.

They are moving upstairs soon to a brand new state-of-the-art clinic - despite the comments by #7 the equipment in the present clinic is quite dated, though it is kept spotlessly clean.

I can recommend them with confidence. The only drawback is in getting appointments for follow-on treatment. I had a bitch about this to the director, and he now understands that people already IN the system need to be given appointment priority over walk-ins when it's not an emergency.

They say it's not as bad as they say it is.

I had some dental work done in Chaing Mai in May, 2004. Don't remember the name but location is directly across from the Chaing Mai gate-large fish tank in the window--very professional. Was well satisfied and prices were good. 2 fillings, 2 crowns and cleaning for $ 200 US.

#4. The prices quoted seem a bit on the steep side. However more to the point I was unhappy with a diagnosis there and the suggested treatment...was at odds with what had been diagnosed in the UK. At Chiang Mai Ram hospital they called in the professor of dental surgery from the University for an opinion...he got it spot on. Called a retrograde filling...involves the roof of your mouth being cut open, pinned back and filled from behind and then stitched up (root canals ? a doddle!) and a lot of prep work. Plus he came in on a Sunday to perform the main work. All of this came to around £200 , was qouted £1200 in UK.
I know this is an unusual procedure but I also checked up on the cost of crowns and they were at least half the price compared to #4.

    Slow down.

I broke a tooth on the plane on the way to Bangkok. I got a dentist from the LP giude, rang them and was able to get an appointment the same day. It cost $50US to have a temporary filling, actually quite a substantial replacement of half my tooth, though when I got home my dentist thought it was good enough to leave permanently. They were very gentle and careful and I quite enjoyed the whole thing.

Asavanat Dental clinic: I have been there three times and have been happy with the experiance. Two surface fillings done, cleaning, xrays, check up.

Phyathai II Hospital: I went there once, for cleaning and check up. They cleaned my teeth but I think that the Asavant DC does a much better job all the way around.

KEY: Make an appointment! Don't just show up at Asavanant

Final None: In the States when I visited the dentist the dentist would be in charge, he would tell me when xrays were needed, and anything else other than the standard cleaning. In Thailand I've noticed that the dentist is always asking me what I want which I don't know is a good thing as I don't know the time frames for say xrays, every year, every two years??
