Earth Day 2004 (April 22)

Hoo hoo! April 22th is Earth Day.

If anyone is in Oaxaca, Mexico and wants to pick up trash at the city parks, let me know.

And I'd like to ask the 99.9% of the rest of you, what are you doing for Earth Day?

Try not to litter the city parks outside Oaxaca?

Fighting with the Czech government over whether I'm allowed to stay in the country. Have to go to Germany to do so.

But on the way, I promise to shake my angry fist at the polluters in North Bohemia.

Hi Ron,
I suppose cleaning up the parks in Oaxaca is as good a gesture as any, but I suspect you are going to look sort of foolish to most of the local folks. They have a system worked out in Oaxaca. People litter the parks all day a gusto, and then the cleaners clean it up before morning. The cleaners will think you are just trying to do them out of a job. Most other people will just think you are being a goodygoody trying to make them look bad. You might do better to take a long walk out, say Avenida Juarez. There are some vacant lots and abandoned businesses out there that no one ever cleans up. Good luck, anyway. You've really got your work cut out for you in Oaxaca (and southern Mexico in general).

What will I be doing? Probably working in our garden. I also have some little trees I should plant.
