i want to buy good quality hand bags for my wife and daughters whilst I travel in Turkey.
Should i buy in Istanbul or regional towns?
Buy in the markets or established shops?

1As you may know Turkey is the land of the genuine fake :) Whatever designer brand you want you can find then in fake! Some are surprisingly well made but others are very shabby and even well made ones are not guranteed to be 100% leather.I would not buy a handbag in any tourist seaside resort-or not for more than 20-30TL just for basic fun use.
For a good quality, well made genuine 100% leather handbag I would expect to have to pay at least 125TL for a small evening clutch bag and well over 250TL for a daytime use bag and upwards in price from there. This would be for a well known, quality domestic brand bag btw, not Gucci,CK,Dior etc.
I would choose to go to either a shop in one of Istanbuls many shopping malls or,if you can find one in regional towns,a small shop where bags are made on the premises.
However,if you are paying 250-350TL+ for a well made 100% leather bag then you have an item that will last for donkeys years and so it should be regarded as a wardrobe investment like a bespoke suit.
I would be highly suspicious of anything claiming to be real leather much under this price range.
There is a nice trick here in seaside resorts and on markets......
"yes my friend real leather look!5 mens belts for 20TL,yes real leather."
They then proceed to run a cigarette lighter along the belt to show it isn't plastic. It doesn't melt. They give it to you to smell.yes,it smells like leather and so you part with your money.
After using 3 or 4 times you will start to see the edges fray as the cardboard centre parts way with the 2 micron thickness of leather veneer on each side!
I have also seen this practice on bag straps and on their side sections too...so if it seems too cheap to be true...it probably is.
This is the web site of a well known, good quality domestic brand just to give you an idea-
Don't show the ladies haa haa!

2Inspect the seams very closely to ensure that they are actually sewn and not simply glued. Someone has developed a sort of "seam tape" which has all of the apperence of a seam but is simply a strip of leather with sticthing that is glue into place. Often times you can see the glue oozing out from under this tape. You won't find a five hundred dollar top quality bag for fifty dollars, but you can find some very good leather bags for aournd $100 USD and good bags for less than that. I have to say that even the 50TL knock offs are better quality than the cheap Chinese garbage that is imported and sold in large US department stores.
