Baja by BikeMy girlfriend and I are considering cycling down Baja this winter. Just wondering if anyone has done this recently and what they thought of it. Definitely looking to get off the main highway as much as possible. Thinking of starting in San Diego and cycling east from there to one of the border crossings (not too interested in riding through Tijuana) and down from there. Not sure how to get back to San Diego though.

1A good book to start off with is Bicycling Baja by Bonnie Wong - ISBN0932653049
With that said I personally would try to get past San Quintin first and then start cycling due to the congestion. I have been on a few Baja Treks (BajaTrek.com) and was with several people who put their Bike on the Bus and started down further. This has two advantages. One is that it allows you to get to some of the better areas quicker and also gives you much information about the areas you may like to visit because of their experience doing Baja. You can also check out the hostel links on Baja Hostels (Bajahostels.com). On one trek I did- The Beach Express- we had a couple from Norway ride with us to Bahia de Los Angeles and then take the back road south to San Fancisquito. They talked a lot with the BT crew before they peddled off. Last I heard they were in La Paz.
