visa at border crossing Sanakham? (Laos) - Chiang Khan (Thai)Hi everyone,
I'll be cycling in Laos and Thailand this Dec-Jan. We are considering crossing the border from Laos into Thailand in Sanakham, so we'd arrive in Chiang Khan.
We've heard you canNOT get a visa crossing INTO Laos at that point. But can you get a Thai visa when entering Thailand from the Lao side there?
And if yes, is the procedure there any different from the one in Nong Khai (which I am familiar with)?

3Is this now an International border?I know in the last few years a number of borders have opened up, I was among first to do the road still under construction from Sanakham to Vientianne, I hitch hiked on back of a truck from Pak Lei when then and previously the speeboat was the only way. Also I crossed Muang Ngeun when it first opened to Thailand things are changing fast
If you enter Thailand overland from wherever the land border is the 15 day exemption (waiver) is valid for most passports.
What is it with Dutch and cycling ha! Ha! a reminder for Dutch cyclists Laos is not FLAT Ha! Ha!

7Sorry I gave the wrong phone number. It's +66 42 821911 and I just spoke with them. Unfortunately you can't cross into Thailand there, but it's because the Laos side immigration prevent it. The nearest alternative is the Nam Heuang border crossing (128km away from Xanamkhan by road, or maybe there is a shorter way off the map, but you still have to cross the Mekong somewhere) to Tha Li district in Loei province. I've been there a few times and depending on which way you're headed next it's either very hilly to the west or south, or if you follow the Heuang river then the Mekong east towards Chiang Khan then Nong Khai it's one of the most scenic rides in Thailand.
