Sincelejo? We're thinking about visiting Sincelejo en route to Mompos from Cartagena. Our trip is mid-December. We're generally fond of non-touristical cities and thought Sincelejo might fit that description. Anybody been lately? Any suggestions for somewhere to stay/something to do? Any reason (safety perhaps) that this is a bad idea? I assume we can get transportation onward from Sincelejo to Magangue to get the boat to La Bodega and then Mompos.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

1I think Sincelejo is not that special but the surroundings can be great in the savanah. Mompox is a true gem, you won't regret that. Something like Cartagena, without tourists. If you travel to Monteria you can easily go to Isla Fuerte. Capurgana can also be an option from the north there. You will enjoy your time there with the Costenos!!

2Thanks Boemelbozzz for your suggestions. In addition to the inland excursions, had been thinking about either Isla Fuerte or Isla Tintipan (from Tolu). Unfortunately, online I can only seem to find info about the "big" eco-lodge on each island. Do you know if there is more modest housing on either island? We won't have camping gear, but not sure we need an all-inclusive either. Or maybe we'll head to Capuranga, which is farther (we're flying in/out of Cartagena) but seems to have more housing options.
Again, many thanks for your thoughts. You hear so much "don't go there, it's dangerous", I'm glad to read that Sincelejo is "not that special" rather than some wild west war zone.
Any other advice greatly appreciated!

3I have friends in Monteria, will ask them if they have any options for housing in Isla Fuerte. I don't know Tintipan actually. Capurgana is pretty far away from Cartagena, but once you're already in Tolu or so it not that far anymore... I have been to Monteria and surroundings a few times and never experienced any danger. But para's are present but if you're not involved it is no big deal I guess. Like any other place in my favourite country... Let me know if you need more info. I have been there many times. Enjoy your trip!!! I have to wait until June.

5Corozal sounds like a perfect stop for us. Any idea whether there would be a direct bus to Corozal from Cartagena (or maybe we bus to Sincelejo and then share taxi from there)?
And from the map, looks like Lorica is right on route to where we would take a boat to Isla Fuerte (assuming we can find some reasonable lodging there -- thanks boemelbozzz for offering to ask your friends). We're into architecture and that sounds like a very cool stop.
Hadn't heard of either of these towns before today; greatly appreciate your help emp99 and boemelbozzz. Our Colombia trip is certainly taking shape & I will report back when we return.
More info/suggestions are welcome!
