Fall foliage - VirginiaHello everyone:
It's time for my annual dose of nature.
Can anyone recommend a nice day trip drive (from Washington DC) in Virginia (or Maryland) where I can enjoy some fall foliage in the coming weeks?
I think if we pushed, the northern end of Shenendoah could be doable for a very long day trip, but I'd like a backup plan just in case it remains closed for the next few weekends.
Driving companions include some furloughed peeps so we're trying to not do an overnight trip, to keep costs down.

3A nice day trip would be a drive to/from the Seneca Rocks area in WV. Much less touristy than than anything suggested here--colors, small towns, some with quaint shops, but no major tourist traps. The trail at the Rocks probably is closed but nearby Dolly Sods is probably open. You probably could do any number of nice hikes in the Shenandoah and do it as a day trip.
The scenery in Maryaland is okay but doesn't compare with anything further East.
