Travel in Februaryhi fellow travelers,
I have 3 weeks of holiday in February next,
I am looking at either Ethiopia or Sri Lanka.
This would be my first visit to Ethiopia and I am wondering if any fellow traveler has been there at that time of year.
here are my vital requirements:
I am mid 50's and an experienced traveler
I need, repeat need, it to be a budget trip
I have 3 weeks (approx. 7-28 Feb, 2014)
I am traveling alone
I don't need to see everything because its impossible!
any suggestions would be much appreciated
thanks in advance.

1Ethiopia is doable on a budget--it's not an expensive country. Sri Lanka might still be a bit cheaper, though but it's been a while since i been there so i don't know how that changed...
Ethiopia and Sri Lanka are 2 completely different countries that have nothing in common. I enjoyed both countries. I assume flights from Ireland to Ethiopia are roughly as expensive as to Sri Lanka, and you need a similar budget there, so you need to make up your mind which country you prefer.
In 3 weeks you can see quite a bit in Ethiopia. If you do the northern circuit plus some trekking or a trip to Harar, you can do that for cheapish. Maybe 600-800 Euro for everything in three weeks. Weather will be fine in February.

2Northern Circuit can be done easily without tour company. If you want to avoid cost of flying it can be done by bus tho I would recommend flying at least some legs. to do fully by bus would need 14 days.
Rift Valley to places like aand Arba Minch also busable as is Harrar.
The bits that need hired vehicle or tour company therefore not budget are Omo and Danakil.
Suggest you buy either Bradt Guide to Eth 6th edition or LP Ethiopia 2013 - look at Amazon reviews before choosing. Do not economise by getting Bradt Ethiopia Highlights as it is aimed upmarket at tourists using tour companies fully.
This website these days is NOT as good as Tripadvisor Ethiopia Forums - several recent reports of trips on there - look through most recent 4 pages of posts.
Also worth looking at Bradt Guide to Eth updates page. Lots of reports.,
IF you have specific questions or would like a suggested budget itinerary please send me a message on TA forums - I am plain addisadvisor there.,

I would be so appreciative of any budget itinerary you can draw up. I really want to go and even though I have traveled a lot I am a bit nervous about alone traveling in Africa.
