Washington State (Ellensberg Area) Outdoor Activity SuggestionsHi there,
My husband and I are in Washington State the 3rd week of October for work and have one free day in the Ellensberg area. We are visiting Seattle previously, and will be seeing Spokane and the Grand Coulee Dam on our work travels.
We were interested in doing some rafting / fishing on the Yakima River but after talking to a local outfitter sounds like the River is too low for this. We are interested in beautiful scenery, moderate level hiking, fly fishing (or regular fishing) - any suggestions for a day activity (we will have the full day) in the area?

1Highway 821 south out of Ellensburg through Wymer to Selah is a scenic drive (for most of the way) and the Yakima Canyon is pretty nice with some day hikes and catch n release steelhead and trout fishing. Large herds of elk congregate at the Oak Creek Wildlife Area feeding station on highway 12 near Naches (they should be arriving in umbers by late October andthere are more day hikes in that area) and just before that the drive up Yakima Mountain (signed dirt road off of highway 410 about a mile from highway 12 junction) usually yields some bighorn sheep sightings. Or head northwest into the Esmeralda Basin up the Teanaway River for some nice, although somewhat strenuous, day hikes. Great, closeup views of Rainier from Chinook Pass on highway 410 (about an hour drive from Ellensburg). The drive from Ellensburg to Leavenworth over Blewett Pass on highway 97 is a nice drive with tons of hiking outside of Leavenworth.
