Looking for a day trip to Kyoto out of a short business trip to Tokyo... I go to Tokyo quite often, but only went to Kyoto once a long time ago, and would like to revisit!
Is there any discount fare for a day trip on the Shinkansen? What is the cheapest shinkansen train that will still allow me to have a full day in Kyoto?
What about the most expensive?
Can I buy online? I'd rather arrive with my tickets in hand and not deal with the complicated Tokyo station on arrival

1Depending on where you will be, and whether you have time, discount ticket shops will have tickets for a small reduction. The tickets from the ticket shops will enable you to take any speed train.
There are a lot of ticket shops in Shimbashi and Shinjuku but also in Ueno- Okachimachi, Kanda, and other main centres on the Yamanote line. Even if you buy on line you still need a physical ticket.
Usually weekday tickets are not discounted and the weekend tix that are discounted tend to be on the slowest trains.
you can check costs of regular tickets on hyperdia.com

If you really want a full day (which would make sense), you need to get there as early as possible since sunset and temple closing time is rather early. In addition to the train you'd still need some time on bus in Kyoto to get to the most popular sights. So you'd want the fastest and earliest Shinkansen (dep around 6am arrive around 8am). I don't know of any discounts for this kind of train, so the ticket resellers mentioned above are probably your best bet (around 5% off the regular fare).
Alternatives could be a night bus which should get you to Kyoto around 7-8am or perhaps a flight (can be cheaper than shinkansen fare), but haven't checked flight timetables to see whether you can get that early to Kyoto.
