If you want to have a bit of the Great Wall to yourself and no entry fees have a think about doing the Zhuangdaokou to Shui Changcheng section which is described page 119 and 117 of the China LP May 2013 edition. It's a 1.5- 2 hour walk along an unrestored section of the wall. I was there two weeks ago on a Sunday and met only 6 Chinese hikers. The bonus is that there is no fee to get on the wall and you can get there by public transport. Two things to note are that you will defintiely need a little hep to find the connecting bus stop at Huairou - just ask when you are heading there on the bus from Beijing. People are more helpful now than ever in China and whilst I do not speak Mandarin you can figure it out. Worth a look.
Guilin Dragon's Bone Rice Terraces - P594 Dazhai using public transport. Easy to get there using public buses, but info in the LP is not completely correct I think. The bus back to Guilin only goes every 2 hours. I missed the bus because it left 20 mins early(already full) and there were then a big group of Chinese tourists waiting for the next bus. Didn't fancy waiting and fighting for seat - hitch hiked down the 17kms to the main road. Walked about 3 kms before getting a ride in the rain to the main road....where the bus back to Guilin just rolled in.
Give it a go. It is not all about going with the hostel tour to these places, China must be one of the safest places in the world to travel.
Good luck, enjoy.

1Zhuangdaokou to Shui Changcheng was really nice., much quieter, much less developed and less known than other sections in Beijing. It is one of the best sections to explore. Getting to huanghuacheng is a little difficult as there is no direct bus that goes here from Beijing, but still this is the place for you if you like beautiful scenery, mountains, lakes and peacefulness of it. There are two hiking routes to choose from- the western one and the eastern one.
