Shianoukville to Ha TienCan anyone tell me about travel between Shianoukville and Ha Tien in Vietnam? We would like to stay about 5 or 6 days in Shianoukville then travel to Prek Chak and enter Vietnam at Ha Tien.
How easy is it to travel this area?
What are the best methods of travel Bus, car and driver or ???
Ideally we would like to take the day and make the trip - how good is the road and how long a drive is it?
Any and all advice and wisdom would be greatly appreciated including if anyone has done this with a private driver, how this was organized and where?

1It's quite easy to do this journey.I do it frequently. There are several companies who offer minibus services between Sihanoukville and Ha Tien.Usually the minibus leaves Sihanoukville at around 08.00,some companies include a pick up from your hotel. The minibus then travels on the main Sihanoukville/Phnom Penh road to Veal Rinh, where it turns off to Kampot, sometimes picking up/dropping off passengers at Kampot and Kep,then to the border and through in to Ha Tien.If there are quite a few passengers on the bus it will actually go through the border and in to Ha Tien town,if only a few,you may have to transfer to a taxi inside Vietnam, which will then take you to Ha Tien itself. It's because the operator has to pay Customs/Immigration if they want to take a vehicle in to Vietnam. The minibus trip takes about 4-5 hours and costs around 15-20 USD depending on the company. If you wanted to take a private car,the cost should be around 45-50 USD,although it might not be possible to take the car/driver in to Vietnam.Sometimes they will let you do it,but you'll have to pay5-10 USD,or you could walk through, and then get a moto or taxi in to Ha Tien town.Moto should cost about 3USD,taxi 5/6 USD.Obviously,as it's a border, the drivers will try and get more, but that's the right price. If you take a private car,you can leave when you want, and stop off when you want to as well.Just make it clear that you want a private car,and there is to be picking up of other passengers on the way.If you organise a car through your hotel they will add a service charge on top.or you could use a travel agent, there's a good one on Ekareach Street almost on the corner diagonally opposite the Caltex petrol station,I think it's called Mottah Travel,or something like that.I've used them in the past, the lady there speaks good English and is reliable and trustworthy(which regrettably is not something that can be said about some other travel agents in Sihanoukville)
