Panama 1 weekwe are planning on staying for 1 week in Panama, before we go on to Costa Rica for a month or so. I understand that Panama City can be explored in 2 or 3 days..right? Now we are wondering where to go for the other 5 or 6 days. We would like a beach place, not too expensive. Any suggestions - how do we get there and back to Panama City - how much. Thanks,

1I wouldnt waste 1 day, much less 2-3 exploring panama city. i didnt care for it a bit, even casco viejo. i spent a few hours walking around it, and it was OK but nothing to rave about. I could see taking a city tour. check out this site, panamatravelunlimited for stuff to do. I killed 5 days using bocas town, checking out the neaby islands and boating up Rio Teribe to Weckso. I can recommend that.

2You can do PC in a day or two if you want to see the canal. You can fly round trip to Bocas for around 230. The bus would be a little long for your time frame. The San Blas islands on the Caribbean side are very very tropical beachy and there are a range of prices for lodging and you can get there and back over land for 50 dollars. Panama City has a great intercity park that is a real life jungle with a number of trails and lots of wild life. Also the Frank Gheary Bio Diversity museum some time in the near future.

5If you have any science/maritime nerdery in you, don't miss the Milaflores lock of the Panama Canal. It is really awesome to see a big ship transit, and the museum is full replicas of the equipment used to build the cancel (skip the cheesy 30 minute 3D tourist video).
If you can cancel your PTY to SJO ticket, you could then head to Bocas Del Toro. Shell out $150 for a one-way ticket, or risk losing your lunch. Then it's a 6-hour bus trip or a short flight on Nature Air back to San Jose.
