Inland Peninsula attractionsTravelling from Surat Thani to Hat Yai by train on the way to Ko Bulon. We may need to kill a day en route - any recommendation for a cultural experience for family with kids?
Also - any comment on getting off in Trang vs. Hat Yai for the transfer onto Ko Bulon? Hat Yai is closer to Pak Bara but looks busier.

1On Trang vs Hat Yai. Go Hat Yai. If the sea is choppy, it's a MUCH easier ride from Pak Bara to Bulon.
Both towns are 'ordinary' industrial towns and equally 'busy'.
Surat Thani to Hat Yai: If you're feeling adverturous, try Phattalung. Some nice karst rock formations, lush scenery, a few caves. Little public transport or English spoken. You'd need to hire a taxi for the day. More expensive on the train if you break your journey.
Much easier is Hat Yai itself. Lots of chinese restaurants, tat markets, a few nice Wats, a big recliing Buddha. Travel agents in town can do you a day-trip package, including a floating market (never tried that one, myself).
better still, try and get to Koh Bulon a day earlier.
