Getting from China to Mongolia (and back)Hi everyone,
I'll be traveling from Shanghai to Hohhot to Erenhot and then Ulaanbaatar (and doing the crazy border shuffle that comes along with it) with a few friends in a couple weeks. I think I have a really good understanding of what it's going to take to get in but I can't find much on the return border crossing from Zamin Uud to Erenhot. Is the situation the same as it is entering Mongolia (i.e. do you have to hire a Jeep?)
We're still exploring options as far as getting back to Hohhot, but have ruled out the train due to the 11 hours it would take. Flights to Hohhot are quick but for some reason far more expensive (around 700RMB) than flying from Hohhot to Erenhot. So that leaves the bus. I was wondering if anyone had done this trip by bus and if there's any place to find a timetable? The train from UB gets to the border early (around 7am) so I figure we can be back in China by mid-morning, so a bus should get us to Hohhot for a late night flight to Shanghai. Just wanted to get an idea of if its easy to get bus tickets, how reliable it is, what times they run. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

1hi, here information about mongolia and about train to across border. yes you have in zammid ud to hire a jeep or share it to across the border. it's easy to do, don't worry for that!
on my website terramongolia.com you can find some time table for the trains where I hope you cna find what you are looking for
no need to take tickets in advance, as even better to take them one day before to be sure of course, it's says in any case, you can also take the train or bus from and to Ub from zamid uud and Chinese border.
hope this helps you
on Ub if necessary we have good friends and contacts and we went there 6 times
have nice trip

2Situation getting from Zamyn Uud back to Erlian is same--need to grab a jeep. But heading southbound, most of the jeeps are going back to China empty so it's easier. Once back in China, get to the bus station. You should be able to get through the border stuff and to Erlian bus station by 09:00 or 09:30. You'll need to just ask when next bus out to Hohhot is but should be something mid-morning. And another one around noon or 1 pm. Expect it to take about 6 hours and there will be at least one intermediate pitstop. I've taken the Erlian-Jining (Ulanqab) bus and it was about 4.5 hours, road condition ranges between good to excellent, pretty easy ride but might want to buy two seats for yourself for comfort. Hohhot is about an hour+ further west from Jining on expressway. You'd easily be in Hohhot by later in the afternoon so catching a night flight would be very doable. Ticket per seat should be in the RMB 70-80 range.
