Air travel from Oaxaca City to ChiapasHello. I'm thinking of including a short trip to Chiapas during an upcoming trip to Oaxaca in January. i'm mostly interested in seeing Palenque and i'm wondering what the quickest way of getting there from Oaxaca City (if there is a "quickest way").
also, any input regarding Canon de Sumidero? Is it possible to hike there? Safe for traveling alone? I suppose that goes for Chiapas in general also.

2No flights from Oax to Tuxtla AFAIK, you'll need to connect through Mex City.
Cañon is definitely safe... very touristy. There are some hikes in the surrounding areas but it's not a pristine natural area (part of the waterway is formed by a large dam). There are some better hikes in the San Cris area I think.
Night bus from Oaxaca, though it takes nearly 12 hours, is a pretty easy option, especially if you take one of the luxury GL or Platino options.

3As #2 says take the night bus to Tuxtula do Sumidero and the on to San Sristobal. Fron SC you can do the hike up Huxtipic MT.. After a few days in SC take the night bus to Palenque. While in SC there are many things to do. Vist Chamula and Zinacantan on Sunday if possible, there is the Jade museum the craft market and the food market.

4There is a road which goes through the Sumidero Park, all the way to the summit. The viewpoints within the park are fabulous.
A good destination if you are a birder. Steve Howell describes the best places in the park in his Guide to Birding in Mexico (if not the correct name, something close to that!!)

5I see an airport icon on a map of the area (for Palenque) but this is not an option it seems. I see that areotucan flies to Tuxtla but didn't check to see if its via DF.
thanks for the input. I only have 14 days in Oaxaca so i'm trying to get to where I want to be as quickly as possible. i'm not against bus travel, but not sure if I want to spend that much time on one when I could be seeing other things!

6There are no commercial flights to Palenque (and hopefully never will be!). It's generally best reached by shuttle from Sancris. Alternatively, you could fly into Villahermosa and head to Palenque from there, and then Sancris/Tuxtla.
Yes, AT definitely goes through DF on those flights... there's just not enough demand for Oax-Tux. The advantage of taking a bus around 9 or 10 p.m. is that you can sleep... though I guess that varies from person to person. Flying can be more exhausting and end up taking 5-6 hours out of your day. All personal pref though...

7"Yes, AT definitely goes through DF on those flights". Really?? I am sure they are direct (since Aerotucan doesn't offer a service to or from Mexico City). To book seats on AeroTucan phone them at 52 951 502 0840, 41 or 42. They have direct flights to Tuxtla at 8 in the morning Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Your only other option is a long bus ride.

9re: traveling alone, I did 8 days in Chiapas alone back in April. I mostly traveled using colectivos and buses, and the odd cab here and there. I did the Sumidero tour from San Cristobal, but I got myself there via public transport instead of a tour group. I would say the area is very safe for a traveler on their own. I got along fine, and generally found locals to be welcoming and helpful.

10thanks for the replies. anyone have any info on the bus options, either overnight from Oaxaca City or from Tuxtla to Palenque? I think i'm leaning towards a flight to Tuxtla, then a bus to Palenque after some exploring.
is this (bus) something I should look to reserve ahead or not to worry?
also, are the flights returning to Oaxaca also on m-w-f?
thank you again!

11Very plentiful bus options, multiple departures 7 days a week until late eve, many different service levels. Yes, the same days:

13More options: note that besides ADO, FYPSA also offers service to Tuxtla Gutierrez from Oaxaca; and there are several companies including Cristobal Colon offering service to San Cristobal de las Casas direct from Mexico City (if you wanted to start your journey there and then visit Oaxaca on the return).
There was a new airport being built in Palenque last time I was there (just west of the highway, across from the old airport); chance are some carrier will offer commercial service once it's in operation.
