2Ive driven from Rio Dulce to Copan a number of times, but never to Lago Yojoa. It looks like there are a couple of routes you can take which avoid San Pedro Sula (which you should avoid).
Google Maps has gotten quite good for the region in recent years. I used it for a recent road trip from Guate to Panama. I suggest checking your route that way. I pulled it up on Maps today and the route it chose did not go thru SPS.
I ran a nav app on my phone which would cache Google Maps so they could be used offline. Very handy. Look for GPS Essentials on Google Play.
