Goldcar hire cancellation?Hi
I'm writing this after reading responses to the post a few days ago about car rental companies in Andalucia, advising that Goldcar should be avoided because of its bad track record. I hurried to check which car supplier we had booked in July and - you guessed it - it was Goldcar! Horrors!! After reading a post by someone who had 400 euros charged to their credit card because of a tiny white dot on the windscreen, I have cancelled our booking. It just remains to be seen whether we have any problems getting the full amount refunded, since we prepaid.
If anyone has been in a similar situation, I'd be interested to hear your experiences...

2I hate to tell you this but it can easily happen with the majority of hire companies, Goldcar might have a few more complaints about them, but all of the companies seem to think they can rip off unsuspecting customers.
I used to regularly hire a car from Europcar each week I would take a car back and pick up a different one, then I checked my credit card and found a charge that should not have been there, which Europcar had taken when I enquired they told me it was for late return of a vehicle.
The time they were saying was 2 hours after I had the paperwork to prove I had picked the new car, they did refund me 14 months later so don't be fooled into thinking it is only Goldcar who are crooks. Make sure all paperwork is on order and avoid out of hours drop offs.

3Thanks for your replies - advice noted about being really careful with the documentation.
Since posting I have received an email from rentalcars.com saying that our money will be refunded to our credit card within 7 days and that there is no cancellation fee, so doesn't look like there is any need to panic - phew!
I still have to book another car, however, which I will do when I get the energy to trawl through the sites. Just want the smallest car for 8 days one way Sevilla - Granada, end of September.
I am so relieved that we seem to have escaped the clutches of Goldcar! - thanks to this forum :)

4#2 is right, unfortunately all car rental companies try to overcharge you in ingenious ways. You should read the small print carefully, inspect the car very thoroughly on arrival and ask the desk staff to note every little scratch on the document you get when you receive the car.
Another favourite scam are fuel policies. Double-check it on the rental contract and be careful to avoid buying any fuel from the rental company. If the company charges you for any fuel, it will do so at hugely inflated price and add a fee on top of that.
Some companies (for example Avis which I used recently) apply a "pick up full return empty" policy. The trick is that they charge you for a full tank of fuel at an inflated price and ask you to return the car with an empty tank, which is impossible, as you will always leave some unused fuel. This practice has been declared illegal by Spanish consumer protection authorities. In my case, I calculated the price difference on fuel between their price and gas station price, added a few liters which I had left in the tank and asked them to refund me the difference. They first refused but then probably re-checked the case and the amount in question was refunded to my credit card without any explanation.
Bottom line: insist on your rights, complain if you are wrongly charged and do complain to consumer protection authorities if the rental company does not solve the issue.
