Does this cost sound right? Budapest to Brasov night trainI'm just having a look on the MAV-START website for rail travel in Hungary. It has quoted me a price for the overnight train from Budapest to Brasov, RO in a private cabin at EUR178.40 (2 people). That seems a little steep to me. I've tried a few dates in Sep/Oct and they are all about the same. Flying with WizzAir (to Tirgu Mures) is quite a bit cheaper at EUR63.41 (2 people).
I prefer the idea of the overnight train but not if it's going to cost 3 times as much! Does this price sound correct? Would it be cheaper to purchase in Budapest at train station the day of/before departure? Is it this expensive because we've chosen a private cabin? If this price is pretty standard then I think we'll just travel with WizzAir...
Thank you :)

1The train fare does sound a bit steep, although it's awhile since I did a similar duration trip by rail. 4 years ago I did Budapest to Skopje and it was only about €50. I went 1st class, but no bed. Nowadays, if there's not too much variation in fares and distance, I'd much rather take a low cost flight.

4Comparing the flight and the night train is a false economy, because in the night train you pay not only for the journey, but also for the accomodation.
To the price of the plane tickets you should add the amount you spend on accomodation in Budapest.
Unless you stay with friends, couchsurf or sleep in a hostel dorm, you should add around 60 EUR at least for a hotel room.
Acutally discounted tickets so called "Fortuna" tickest are available for this train/route for 49 EUR/person in a T3 sleeper, but you must buy the tickets 7 days in advance. I'm not sure if this deal is available online or only in Hungary.
The ticket price you got is so expensive because to travel in aprivate(single) compartment you must have a 1st class ticket.
If the 2 you would travel together in a double compartment the total fare incl. the sleeper reservations would be: 150 EUR.

8Fair enough. :) Thanks.
Possibly had a change of plans anyway. Just realised that the Transfagaran and the Transalpina roads won't be open until late June/early July so may leave Budapest and go to France for Le Man 24 hours (mid June) and come back to Romania after that.
Bit more flying about but we don't want to miss those roads since we're coming all the way from Australia!
