More questions about Sierras.Hi,
we are still planning various details of our return to Ecuador's sierras. Few more questions:
1. There are two ways to get to Chimborazo National Park from the North (we will start from Latacunga). One - to take a road that goes from Ambato south-west towards Guaranda - and then make a turn South-East to the road that leads back to Panamericana and Riobamba (on the map, this road is indicated sometimes "via del Arenal".)
The other option is to drive Panamericana from Latacunga almost the way to Riobamba, turning North-West to the "via del Arenal" road there.
Our question: which way is more spectacular? I am not sure we will be taking both of them - probably just one of them.
2. We would like to be in Latacunga during Mama Negra celebrations. It is said in LP Guidebook that the dates are Sept 22-24 but festivities may be scheduled for the nearest weekend? Or does this apply to the secular celebrations that are held in November whereas religious celebration is always Sept 22-24 (which will be Sunday - Tuesday this year.) We are trying to plan our trip so that we are in town on the right day (and I do realize the thing about not being able to book anything so late in the process - another reason to rent a car where we can sleep.)
Thank you so very much for any info!

2Thank you very much, Ecuabound and Willemspie!!
We are in Mexico by November so I have been looking for the one Mama Negra in September. We may still try to catch it, schedule permitting - even if it's not as popular as the one in November :) Just not sure when exactly it takes place :(
We may end up driving Ambato towards Guaranda and turn left, as per above. Hike half a day till sunset. And then go towards Riobamba after sunset. So I guess we won't see much on our way out - but my understanding from your comments the Ambato-Guaranda road is really spectacular.
