Opera and musical concertsHello, my partner and I will be in Vienna for 2 nights - 31 Aug / 1 Sept.
We would like to see some opera, classical music, or perhaps even something more contemporary. Please can you advise where to go - and the range of options available. We are unable to afford more than one so, while we enjoy culture and beautiful things are not sure if 3 hours of classical will be slightly staid for us.....Perhaps also its the 'done' thing in Vienna but are there other possibilities?

1I'm afraid you will be a little bit too early for Vienna's two main opera houses (Volksoper and Staatsoper), which will open for the new season in early September, but there are concerts at the Wiener Musikverein - have no idea though if the orchestra is any good - again, the best talent may not play there before the start of the new concert / theatre season in September.
You can also check out the events calendar on the website of the Vienna tourist office here (note the hotel/events search function to the right), or walk up to one of their offices when you're there to ask about what's on.
But it's not compulsory to go to a classical music concert while in Vienna, the cultural police won't arrest you if you don't - do what you really enjoy.
