Anyone hear about the Laki -> Þverá trailHi all
I had a treath a while ago, see:
All is well and I did found a loot of information untill now... well yah it was about 2 months ago... but still I have some little questions ...
In one of my books I found that there's a trail Þverá - miklafell - laufsallir - Laki. But there's no map mentioned in that ' Dominicus' travel book . In the LP they write there's a map of the 'landmælingar islands' map DMA1913 II 1/50000 and Langisjó map 1/100000. Do they show the trail on one of those maps? I hear there is a good bookstore in front of the 7/11 shop on the Austurstræti, do they sell those maps or is there another store to suggest?
And last but not least... From Laki to Eldgjá not trails mentioned but it seems to be about +-20kms. is there a shortcut somewhere or trail? I did look on:
not much to find and no trail at all, just wonder if that part is safe to ford as I will walk. And if there's no shortcut, what's the best way from Laki till Eldgjá .... I hope I do not need to walk the whole way back till Kirkju... or jah ..just take a bus then... would give me a break at least.
As I read there's a lot of fording from Eldgjá till Landmannalaugar ... about 10 times and wonder if that's all doable by feed or if they have footbrideges on those rivers.
Thanks a lot ... looking forward to this hiking trip

2A few years ago I cycled this trail. It starts at the ringroad near the farm Þverá, about 16 km east of Kirkjubaerklaustur. It's not marked, but clearly visible. There are a few sidetracks:
The first is an unclear path along a fence after about 10 km, and goes to some nice waterfalls in the river Hverfísfljót.
The second is to the Miklafell cabin, where you can stay overnight for ISK 1500 (in 2010). You may get a visitor there, because the place is haunted by an English fighter pilot who crashed nearby in the 2nd World War.
A third sidetrack, after about 25 km goes to some caves (I haven't been there), and a fourth to a private cabin, that you can see from the main track. But you're already close to Laki than.
On this map you can see the trail : http://ja.is/kort/?type=map&x=558730&y=384252&z=4

From Laki to Eldgjá is only a few kilometers, but in between is the river Skaftá, a major glacial river. The only bridge outside Kirkju is at the farm Skaftardalur. There is an unclear path that starts at a sidetrack of the F206 to the farm.
