Tusheti self drive? We will be in Georgia for 16 days by the end of August and also considering going to Tusheti. We'll have a 4WD, but I'm not quite sure if it wouldn't be more relaxing just to get one with a local driver and leave ours at the bottom (any idea where?). I'm used to driving mountain roads and not really afraid, but would like to hear some opinions...

1It's not too difficult, unless there is a landslide or it's raining heavily. It's a steep and narrow road, but little to no mud, mostly gravel or rock. The main problem is traffic coming from the other direction, but it's manageable - not too much traffic, and every few hundred meters the road widens to allow two cars to pass. For sure you will see more of the scenery with a driver, given that you really have to focus on the road. On the other side, if you drive it might be easier to make frequent stops.
On a sidenote, roads in Tusheti itself are more difficult than the Abano pass itself. There are some deep river crossings, steep and potentially muddy climbs etc...

2Thanks a lot, that helps.
We're still not sure if we should include Tusheti or not - to really enjoy it surely you'd have to invest at least 3-4 days including going up and down, no matter what type of transport, and it will be tiring.
We'll do have some time with 16 total days in Georgia, but I'm in need for a few days at the sea just to relax after the last few busy weeks.
So: Is Tusheti a must, given that we'll see Mestia and Kazbegi and have hikes there? Would you trade it in for some other sights in Georgia? It's difficult to judge if you haven't been there...

3Personally I would rather visit Tusheti than Svaneti...nothing against Svaneti, but Tusheti is just in a league of its own. Less developed, more remote and rougher than Svaneti, including the approach over the Abano pass (vs a surfaced road to Mestia). Nothing against Svaneti of course, it's also a great place to visit.

6Nice offer. I will take your number with me, I suppose it is a Georgian number. We'll pick up the car on Aug. 30th, but we're a bit hesitant to start off our trip right with Tusheti not to spoil the rest of Georgia, so probably we will drive to Tusheti towards the end of our stay, around Sep. 10th. But if we decide otherwise, I will give you a call!
