Reykjavik at ChristmasMy friend and I are traveling to to Iceland from Toronto on December 20th until around the 25th. Anyone have any suggestions on what we should do, or where to stay? We will probably stay in Reykjavik, so anywhere you think we should stay? The cheaper the better! Any good tours? pools? Thanks!

1My boyfriend and I were just in Iceland this past March for 2 weeks. We drove the ring road but while we were in Reykjavik, we stayed at the Downtown Hostel and found that it was in a central location & the price was great. I believe the other HI hostel (just outside of the downtown core) is slightly cheaper...it really depends on whether or not it is important for you to be close to everything.
As for what to see and do...I would suggest spending just 1-2 days in the city and then traveling either by rented car (rentals CAN be cheap and we found that a 2 wheel drive car was perfectly fine in the winter; we spent about 600 CAD for a 2 week rental) or guided tour to see some of what the country has to offer. If you rent a car, you will find that there are lots of scenic spots to stop along the way so you aren't really 'wasting' days driving. My favourite was the glacial lagoon (we saw the auroras as an added bonus).
Back to accommodations...if you rent a car and aren't picky about where you sleep, you can do what we did...bring a tent & warm sleeping bag and camp out under the stars. If you are lucky you will catch the auroras :) the best accommodations are free!!!
