4I just went for a day trip from Prague.its about 90 minutes by train from prague bit took us a bit longer as there was engineering work on the track and we had to be bussed past it. Did the tower ,its quite small but great views and inside the tower building in a very good medieval museum, the lady in charge here for some reason though I was swedish????? we wandered right round the old town you can still see some of the old walls, there is a maze of streets and seemingly this was part of its defesnsive system. had lunch in a nice bar ,BTW there is even a Whisky bar in the Old town. in the afternooon we vitsited the Town hall were there is a Hussite museum and from there we did the tour of the underground passageways( you can do it all on one ticket).the tour was good but we were on it with about 50 School kids and we were the only english speakers,we were give notes in english to help us understand what was going on and the guide very kindly came to us and gave some basic info in english at the important bits. it was good fun. there is a big church in the main square we did try to go in but there was some sort of function going on. from the Old town we walked down to a water fall and from there visited a carp farm, don't think you can officially visit it but nobody threw us out. we walked back to the train station via the man made resevior it was built after a major fire in the old town and as they had no water to put the fire out decided a resevior was needed ,its a very peasant place.
The train station is about a 10 minute or so walk from the old town,i think you can get a bus part of the way but we didn;t bother.. It is a very pleasnat place, really nice people and quite deviod of tacky gift shops.English is spoken in many places mainly by the younger folk but all in all a very pleasant day trip from Prague

5Hi Craig, thanks for the feedback...I actually tried to get to Tabor on my recent trip but couldn't get any response from the hostel so ended up (fortunately, as it turned out) in Jindrichuv Hradec for a couple of days, instead...been through Tabor now twice on the bus and it looks like an interesting place, plus any people I've met from there are friendly and outgoing so one for the notebook, I'm sure...

6you're welcome ,I hope you get there some time.
I am back in Prague in late October early November meeting up with some friends to visit a few micro breweries and hopefully do a bit of walking near Prague.
My winter project is to try and work out some walks taking in a micro-brewery or very good country pub on the walk but finishing at a microbrewery that is within easy access of transport back to the starting point.

7Off the top of my head, Craig, but this might be your kind of thing...in the north, between Loket nad Ohri and Karlovy Vary, the blue trail there is 17kms over hill, dale and along the river...took me about 3 hours to walk and around the halfway mark there's a famous landmark of some very imposing and unusual shaped rocks...opposite is a really good bar and restaurant where every language is catered for...in Vary, I see there is now a brewpub..
To cap it all, if you're still weary from the walk, they've even got a beer spa!...

8thanks for that I will get a good look when I have a bit more time (busy at work).
I am using this map to find micro breweries that can be fitted into a walk.
In Late May I took the train to Karlstejn and did a walk from Karlstejn over the hill to Svatj Jan Pod Skalou had lunch in a small hotel there ,pork goulash, bread dumplings and a beer for 89kc, then walked down to Beroun and had a few beers in Berousnky Medved before getting the train back to Prague.

9Funnily enough, I was thinking of Beroun initially as being a possible location for this kind of 'liquid ramble' but was't aware of the brewpub situation...sounds like a really good base for a couple of days walking to the likes of Karlstejn, Krivoklat and Koneprushy...plus the occasional beverage, of course...))
