Tips for paklenica, vis, brela, and plitviceHi there,
My girlfriend and I are going on a 10+ day trip to croatia and have some questions. We'll be there from August 31- September 9th. It's hard to gauge the whole high vs shoulder season thing. Is early september slammed like August, i.e. do we need reservations everywhere we stay? I see the ferries run differently from 9/1 forward.
Vis- Due to the ferries/catamaran getting back to split is tricky since all the boats leave before 8am. We're planning on hitting Paklenica via renting a car in Split from Vis. The options are getting to Split around 3 (and losing an extra day) or having to catch a boat the following day very early and driving to Starigrad/Paklenica. Any sense of how long all that would take? I.e. ferry to car rental to Paklenica? Is 2 days enough for Vis? If we stay the extra day it would be 3 nights and 2 full days. Any accommodation recommendations for private residences for 2 people? A big draw for us is Stiniva beach, and with the Ferry I figured we'd stay in Vis or Kut to minimize travel? Also how do you get around Vis to reach Stiniva beach? Without a car, is there a bus? I understand you have to hike in from somewhere, but can't get a clear sense of travel. Could you ride a bike there from one of the towns?
Brela- I'm coming up from Montenegro and would like to stop in brela before meeting my girlfriend in Split. I was planning on just spending a day at the beach. Is there afforable accommodation? Is that enough time. I'd be traveling Dubrovnik (via Montenegro) to Brela, then the following day Brela to Split.
Paklenica- We want to spend two nights here and leave for plitvice the following morning. Reading the guidebooks its hard to get a sense of the hikes and sleeping options. Without camping gear, is it possible to stay in town or in a hotel and do a series of day hikes? Any recommendations for trails? Places to stay for 2 people on a budget?
Plitvice vs. Krka- I've read that Krka is less breathtaking than Plitvice though you can swim in the falls (though not sure how cold the water is?). Any thoughts on this? We'd be driving to Plitvice to spend the whole day, and drive into Zagreb at night.

1For Vis in early August, I would book in advance--the season seems to be spilling into September these days. The tourism website has links to private accommodation: http://www.tz-vis.hr
If you are quite fit, then you can definitely bike around the island (tourism office also has biking trails), but I took one look at the hill to get out of Vis town and decided on a scooter instead.
It takes long enough to get to Vis that I recommend three nights, but up to you.
You can check the drive time from Split to where you stay in Paklenica on viamichelin or google maps.
Hope someone will chime in about Paklenica.
