Rio-Ilha Grande-Paraty, Sao Paulo -Iguazu FallsHello this is our itinerary for Brazil starting the end of August. We are on a low budget as we are travelling for 6-8 months. It would be great to have people's advise with who know the place well :-). Best transport ideas, hostels, things to do and see etc.
Rio - 4 days Costa Verde bus??
Mangaratiba or Angra do reis - ilha Grande (stay on the Island for 1 week)
Paratay - 1 night
Sao Paula - 2 night
Iguazu Falls I heard that if we go into Paraguay
Buenos Aires - I heard if we go into Paraguay it is a lot cheaper to get the bus from Iguza falls to Buenos Aires
Thank you :-)

1You have 6-8 months but are rushing through this as fast as possible. 1 week on Ilha Grande is great. But 4 days in Rio....spend a week there. Paraty has more than just the 'colonial' township - its got a lot of great beaches nearby which are worth exploring. I always suggest going to Trindade (30-40 minutes away).
Sao Paulo is a massive city. I mean massive. 2 days and a bit will not really do it justice. But its generally just a stop over for most though it has its charms.
Just catch a bus from Puerto Iguazu to Buenos Aires. Its going to cost you a S*#$load no matter what.

4Well, it's backtracking.
Note: The bus from Paraty to S.P. is about 6 hours. Bus (Reunidas) Paraty to S.P. is R$47
TAM is showing R$185 one way direct from S.P. to Foz in early September, and one flight is from Congonhas which saves a shlep and bus fare out to the GRU airport.
From Angra do Reis (after you take the ferry across from Ilha Grande, 45 minutes or so), the bus to Rio is about 3 hours. Fare is R$40.
And then bus to the airport, maybe another hour.
75GBP (R$262) one way Rio to Foz?

5If its a stop over may as well just go all the way....A flight will be better. And probably on par with the bus.And you won't arrive feeling absolutely shattered after a long bus ride.
Same can be said from Puerto Iguazu to Buenos Aires - buses are about 150 USD. Flights will be about 100-200USD. Depending on airline. Check it out before going.

8Argentine buses are expensive. The problem is flights are also expensive. A bus from Puerto Iguazu (Argentine side) to Buenos Aires is going to be about 600+ pesos (or about 150 USD). It is 18 hours and you get a pretty damn good bus for that. However the flight (middle of September) is $269 USD.
Taking the 48 hour bus ride is just silly. Go see the falls - have a stop over, and see a natural beauty.

9This is the TAM flight I saw from Congonhas (the in-town domestic airport in S.P.):
departs 13:43 from CGH
arrives 15:24 at IGU
flight number: JJ3340
duration of flight:1:41
fare "basico": R$184.53 (52.61 GBP)
If you get a very early morning bus (like 6am or earlier) from Paraty to the bus station in S.P., then taxi to Congonhas, you could even make this flight the same day probably. Or spend an overnight in S.P. looking around, as you oringinally indicated.

11Unfortunately - the only options you have are to:
- Fly from Foz to BA. This would probably have you go back to Rio/SP and fly from there to BA.
- Fly from Puerto Iguazu to BA.
- Bus from Puerto to BA.
The thing is, that Argentina flights are super expensive for foreigners. You wont get much change from 200 USD. The bus is about 150 USD. So either way its going to be expenisve.
I guess you need to decide whether or not Iguazu is worth stopping at - it is a great attraction. And I would recommend it. It just depends if you do as well....

14Sheryl, if you book a ticket from Foz to BA by bus. You will must likely have to go to Puerto to catch it. (we booked buses from Puerto to places in Brazil and had to cross and catch it from the Rodoviaria in Foz.
There are a few bus (rio to BA via Foz do Iguazu - Brazil side) that goes a few times a week. You have Crucero del Norte (I checked on their site it was 800 Argentine Pesos. And Pluma which was 135 reais (rather cheap) and thats convencional (so not great comfort for a long journey). The Pluma bus doesn't go every day and neither does the Crucero bus (this is from the Brazilian Side of the Falls.
However, you will get much more choices in Puerto (more bus companies ply that route from Puerto to BA). It depends on the type of bus you take - conventional, semi cama, cama.....All provide different levels of service - however you will get a meal on all of them and some form of entertainment (usually).
Bus Prices This is the bus timetable from Retiro to Puerto Iguazu. But it gives you an idea of the price you will be paying.
